interview about the SibSub Skate Camp 2014

sibsub skatecamp logo sibsub skate camp

If you don’t know, last summer (9-15 june) near Tyumen in Russia was held the 2nd SIBSUB skate Camp! If you don’t know what it’s all about read the interview and watch the video 😉 I think that is one of the most memorable event in the history of skateboarding…For one week more than 150 skaters camping together skating streets , contest, having fun and all the ingredientest of true skateboarding life… Read the interview and join the camp this year 😉

Last year(2013) in Tyumen , Western Siberia was held the first SibSub Skate Camp ,the biggest skate camp in your country. This year , for the second edition , the Skate Camp has took place again with a massive program and a lot of skaters from all over the country ,the recipe was perfect. What changed from the first edition?
Well, would be wise to mention that the first camp was really nice too – it was even more mental for there were less skaters and everyone knew each other. It seemed like a family holiday trip. Lots of things changed: the program improved a lot, more people from larger variety of cities came, more pro skaters were invited, and still it was partly familiar with a family holiday trip. We can discuss the changes for days but the fact is that skateboarding was the main thing in both camps.

The program was really intense and well planned . How long did it take you to put it all together (organize, plan, build)?
First ideas were spoken half a year before or so, but the preparing started three months before the camp. We were extremely scared that we would fail to meet the deadline, and we did our best to be on schedule. An awful lot of things are very difficult in Russia – we mean getting travelling permissions for underaged children, talking with the police to make street contests possible, railroad problems – those really stand alone, believe us you don’t wanna go into it. We suppose that no other skateboarding event ever had so much red tape, and we want to thank everyone who helped us to realize the project.

sibsubskatecamp5

You have already started planning for next year?
Sure we have. We even have got the program already. The next skate camp will have two sessions, if you want to know a secret.

The SibSub Skate Camp come to be more and more popular in your country and maybe internationally. You have already this year some foreign skaters?
Yeah, we have invited our friends from Antiz skateboards. Very few foreign skaters reach Moscow, let alone Western Siberia. Moreover, many Russian skaters have never visited Tyumen. We really want everyone to visit our city now and again in order to develop and popularize skateboarding in the world. Skateboarding is a family to us and nothing will ever destroy it.

The first thing that comes to mind thinking back to the 2014 edition?
The idea started in several remote cities at the same time. There are a lot of Russian skateboard ideologists, and we were lucky to draw their attention to the project. The first thing that comes to mind is that everything was amazing and simultaneously extremely difficult to take care of 150 skateboarders.

sibsubskatecamp1 sibsubskatecamp6

One of the most funny facts during the camp?
Oh, there were many. Pasha Kuznetsov, just as everyone arrived at the camp, took a ride on the cableway, holding his board on both trucks, it was some Indiana Jones stuff. Pasha stands alone in Russian skateboarding and you have to see it to believe it.

There was a problem with the trains’ departure(we told you about the railroad). According th the plan, all the skaters were about to go home by train and in the same car, just the way they arrived in Tyumen. Everybody was on board, even things started to get unpacked – and without rhyme or reason the conductor walks into the car and asks everyone to leave it. A list or some other paper believed to be wrong. You won’t believe it but the week before folks travelled to Tyumen with tha same papers and no problems have occured. Well, we had to solve the problem right off the bat, otherwise a hindred people would be unable to get home. It took a lot of running along the corridors and over the railways, there were quarrels now and then, and the train was leaving in 15 minutes. The funniest thing was that while everybody was leaving the car in stress, the oldest and the most experienced camp member Alexey Lapin wasn’t giving a thing about all the crap, he just made himself at home and went to sleep like everything was glad! And conductors haven’t said a word, ha ha, Alexey was just too talented and respectable so he dodged the problem like nothing. Antiz riders had most of the fun, though – they decided to travel with the flava instead of taking a plane to Moscow in order to plunge into the atmosphere. In the long run, the problem was solved just in the nick of time and two trains epicly set off – one to the East, and, in a minute, the other, to the West.

The trick closed during the week were really massive , it seemed to me, that the skaters did not spare themselves and were given their best. Who has impressed you the most?
Just imagine yourself skating and living with the best 150 skateboarders, everyone inspiring each other. 24/7 shredding. You’ve heard a bit about each skater, but have never seen them in real life. If skateboarding itself was the greatest thing about the camp, the second place goes to the fact that for the first time ever all Russian flavas and crews gathered in one place. And of course every rider would do his best to state thyself and the crew. So we don’t see it possible to pick one, because there was no person who wouldn’t perform sick skating. And that’s cool.

Which was the most incredible trick during the week?
Alexey Naymushin did an enormous frontside boardslide at the Drama Theatre rail. The rail is huge, it goes down an 11 stairset, and it ends the way that you can’t boardslide it without doing a pop out. The whole camp delegation arrived at the spot to take part in Best Trick Contest down eleven, and that was the gnarliest thing we have ever seen – the set has been only ollied just a couple of times by that time, and people went for hardflips and back heels. No one ever thought about grinding that rail, let alone sliding it knowing that you won’t just land it, that you have to be quick on the way out. And Alexey was just like, «Hey, I want a front board to go down here, why not to do it?» So he did it.

sibsubskatecamp2

What about the sponsors . It was easy to find some this year?
This is actually a common trouble in Russia – since skateboarding is not officially a sport, the government doesn’t budget for it, and private companies are rarely in a position to supply us. However, this time we convinced government to help us with money and assured them that this project is really necessary.
We also managed to get some different stuff for prizes by making proper advertising for several companies. Hopefully, every unsponsored rider was happy to get a board or a pair of shoes – actually, almost everyone received something. Thanks to the sponsors for the support one more time – we really appreciate it.

How do you see the female scene in your country (is growing or was more massive a couple of years ago) ?
The new wave of skateboarding popularity makes more and more girls start skating, but there are only a few really good female skaters in Russia. As for the camp, we had 3 female members, and they lived with the rest of folks.

The skateboarding schools and skate camps helps kids learn much more safe and fast tricks. How much you think the skate schools and SibSub skate camp have helped to grow the scene?
We primarily counted on unlimited communication between pros and rookies. Kids had a week for watching live skating, playing games of s.k.a.t.e., askink questions, etc. We hope that this will have an impact on children and spark the interest in new kids to begin skating. We really have plans to develop skateboarding.

Who was the youngest skater?
A local kid about 11 years old.

Russian skaters were and still are very strong at the European level and worldwide. How do you see the scene today, how are the kids today?
Some guys really achieved the European level, but there are only about 10 of them. The problem is that Russian winter lasts 6 months and there are only a couple good indoor skateparks in the whole country. Even Moscow – it has an awful lot of skateparks and concrete plazas, but nothing indoor. Hopefully, our projects will do good motivation for other cities.

sibsubskatecamp3 sibsubskatecamp4

The economic crisis is being felt in almost the entire Europe. How it manifests in the Russian skate scene?
You see what’s going on with ruble, and we are scared about the stuff prices – they have already grown twice. No idea how kids will persuade their parents to buy them a board. But we can’t help but hope everything will be alright, and we must say that the crisis won’t stop us skating and working on projects for the development of skateboarding. We are working on the new project at the moment – Sib Sub Pro & AM 2015, and it will have nice prize money. You are welcome.

last words?
Love what you do. Love skateboarding. Visit our contests, our Skate Camp 2015 and just visit Tyumen – we are happy to welcome you at any time.

Interview with Dani about CIRUS skateboards

ciruslogo

Hey readers! Here you have a new interview to read. This time is about an European skateboard manufacturer! Cirus Skateboards , a Hungarian skateboard manufacturer from skateboarders for skateboarders. A must read, check it out!

First of all , tell us when and how did you first get into skateboarding?
I was about 13-14 years old, when I bought my first second hand, very used Acme deck with slick layer on the bottom. At that time it took roughly 1 year to spare quite some money to buy a complete new Powell deck. The most interesting fact is, at that time I payed the same amount of money as I would do nowdays. Meaning, skateboarding was 3-4 times more expensive at that time then today.

Favorite riders?
I cannot be biased. At this moment we are sponsoring 2 guys in Hungary, Zsolt Karkossiák and Zoltán Tűri (freestyle). So, they are my favorites.

Are you skating nowadays?
With street decks just when I am testing my new construction, or taking out randomly a deck from production to check quality. With longboard more frequently, I have a special longboard shape deck, called Natadola, I do skating with that one.

Tell us about your company CIRUS skateboards ,how this adventure was born…Explain what inspired you to start this company and when this project has started?
My profession is carpenter and I always loved working with wood, I decided to start producing own skateboards because of the above mentioned high deck prices to make it available for more teenager at reasonable price.
Around 8 years ago I made my first decks from maple. I soon realized that if I order blank decks from other manufacturers, and sell them under my own brand –name, I cannot guarantee quality products. In addition I wanted to come up with my own shape and design, so only one of these reasons would have been enough for me to consider to start my own production of skateboards. As far the maple I went as far as to choose the maple (Acer Pseodoplatanus as a local species, similar to Acer Saccharum – sugar/hard/rock mapple) logs myself here in Hungary. Of course there were some promising results, but since I had not started this because of business reasons, it took me two other testing series when I dared to tell I was going in the right direction. It was also quite disturbing that during production there were some very good series but that high quality could not be provided continuously in Hungary, because renewal of the wood was extremely slow and inhomogeneous. I had to choose whether I lower down my professional drive and make medium quality boards or I needed to find another way.
The new direction was the usage of bamboo.

cirus1 cirus5

Why the name CIRUS?
My dog’s (Rottweiler) name was Cirus.

Your company is based in the middle of Europe in Hungary..How is the skateboarding scene there (there are also some big contests during the year..) ?
You might laugh, but many times I was informed about the events, contests from Hungary via your site. But there are couple of big events like Erzsi Skate Cup and OSG as well known in the surrounding countries, too.

In your personal opinion, how has the skateboarding scene in your country changed over the years and what is it like now?
So far we were focusing more on production in the last couple of years, and unfortunately we couldn’t follow up what is actually went on, what kind of competitions, fairs, exhibitions are in Hungary. Learning from that, in this year we will participate in OSG, as exhibitor, what have developed significantly in the last 2-3 years.

Tell us about the wood and the materials you use in your manufacturer
One of the the reason was that we started to use bamboo, that it is very strong and has a dense fiber structure. Its tensile strength is huge and is a much stronger material than the maple.
Second reason was that we don’t want to be the 3534th maple skateboard producer in the world, or just order blank decks with our own graphic. We just simply wanted to make something different, something better, something unique.
Environment reason: Bamboo forest renews in 4-5 years after harvest.
In 2014 we started to use carbon fiber in 3 types of decks from our portfolio, to make their lifetime longer, to spare money for our users.
In the short future we are planning to organize workshops in our production place to let people insight to get physical experience how skateboards are made.

cirus2 cirus4

What about the minimum orders for a skateboard company or for someone that want to order some of your decks with a personal design. Explain how a collaboration with you can start.
The MOQ is 5 pieces. As we are a manufacturer, we also prefer to serve smaller quantities to more smaller teams, retailers. As you can see on our web-shop, we offer our decks with free delivery to European countries, so buyers don’t have to deal with extra costs on top.
Personal design is also manageable, but for that respect we need booking of min. 50 decks. Of course we make individual print even for 1 deck as well, for present or surprise purpose, and it is more expensive, but very special. Usually a group of friends are buying it for someone as birthday present.
If you have your own graphic on heat transfer sheet, then we can heat transfer them on decks as well.
The collaboration can be started first with an email to cirus@cirus.hu with details of inquire. If you need help to decide about choosing type of deck, then you can rely on us, we can help you.

What about your riders, who is in your team?
As I mentioned above one of them is Zsolt Karkossiák, whose name should be more familiars for skaters in Pro competitors.
Our new, and big help in Hungary is Zoltán Tűri as sponsored freestyle skateboarder with quite good international results.

Plans for the future?
To make Cirus Skateboards more well known in Europe.

Last words?
Thanks Luca a lot for your immediate replies and your support via your site!

With wich of your tricks from the the movie you are more proud?

Last trick nollie hardflip tverskie stairs

screenshot.19

Do you remember one of the most difficult trick, with whom you have lost so much time?

All tricks took the same time, but I’ll tell you about another trick. This is my most unreal trick which I did. I lost three days to leave the correct. swith bs boardslide caballerial late flip out.

In August came out the short documentary /film “THANK YOU MOSCOW” by Artur Nilov. Can you tell us more about the project. How this idea was born?

Arthur great Russian patriot ,but lives in Latvia. He wanted to make a film about Moscow .About how this town can change your life so that it looked patriot. He offered it to me, because I’m from Siberia, it is very far from Moscow. And Moscow has really changed my life.

Hey guys, i have not much material to publish a “big” magazine
instead of publish a paltry one I decided to publish the interviews separately on my website and here is the first one . Enjoy reading
Here is the interview with Kostya Kabanov , skater from Saint Petersburg. We were able to see him recently in his new video part in the new movie of the Russian company Union Skateboards. He was also present at some big contests like Mystic Cup (6th place) and Helsinki HookUp (2nd place)
Read this interview about the D.I.Y. Video part end other interesting stuff.

What made you start skateboarding?
It was 2006 ( I was 11-12 years old), childrens playground, I found an ugly skateboard and i’ve try to skate, but after 5 hours some guys wanna kick me, so I leave it in a bush haha and then I went home and I’ve asked my mom to buy me a skateboard

In Saint Petersburg skateboarding is not so much developed like in Moscow, but skaters in saint-p are more crazy, more amazing, more ambitious
We don’t have good skateparks for training, but in Moscow there a lot of concrete skateplazas
So I think in Russia Moscow is the best place for skateboarding 🙂

Tomas Vintr about the Grand Prix Beroun – CZECH REP.

grandprix beroun 2014

Here is a short interview with Tomas Vintr about the Grand Prix Beroun. Tomas is a pro skateboarder from the Czech Republic , he has been on the scene for some time now, and is still gaining momentum and recognition everyday with his unique skating. He’s a longtime Pro for Vans Europe and he’s the organizer of the Grand Prix Beroun that is the biggest skateboard competition with international PRO riders in the Czech Republic!
Read the interview below to know more about this great event 😉

the interview is taken from my online magazine nr. 10, CLICK HERE and check the mag 😉

How was born the idea of the GrandPrix Beroun?
The first even was organised on may 22nd 2010 as a grand opening of the brand new concrete plaza in Beroun, the Czech Republic. Beroun is the city where i was born and lived all my childhood. The mayor of the city called me one day and said they would like to build a skatepark together with me and have the skatepark built the way i like it – under my name…. The whole event of the Grand Opening went really good and i came up with an idea of starting a contest that would give something back to the scene, celebrate the skaters and bring some good music bands to have an event for everyone – it was, still is and will be COMPLETELY FREE for spectators.

The Grand Prix Beroun is every year bigger and every year most popular. This year prizemoney will reach 7.000 USD. Which are the other news in this edition?
we have a lot of news every year – the biggest news this year are the music festival, which will be bigger and much better than the previous years, i had the opportunity to book and bring the best HIPHOP artists and performers in the Czech Republic, so we will have Johny Machette & Phoenix, INDY & LA4 (kmbl vs gyzmo) and JAMES COLE & DJ DOEMIXXX performing live on the “Live Stage” and 4 great DJs for the afterparty: DJ LU2, LUCKYBOY, NZYM and NOBODYLISTEN. We will have a bunch of other free activities such as fingerboarding tent in a professional skatepark, 17x3m skimboarding track for everyone, parkour exhibition and for the first year, a GRAFFITI JAM, where we invited the most famous graffiti artists in the Czech Republic. And finally for the skate event – I AM TRYING to bring more professional skaters from all over the World, at this moment, im trying to have Micky Papa, Greg Lutzka, Kieron Brodie, Alex Mizurov, Maxime Genin, Adrien Bulard and a bunch of others in Beroun. THIS IS GOING TO BE BIG:)))

Since there’s the “crisis”… It was hard to find the sponsors for this year’s edition?
it’s always difficult with the sponsors, but i am fighting until the last minute to make this event bigger and better than last year….. AND IT WILL BE 🙂

How much has changed for you from when you have organized the first edition until this one this year? Is nowadays so much easier for you to organize such a event?
As i mentioned, the event is growing bigger every year, so it takes more time to prepare, organise, promote, more people who are working with me, promoting, organising and just regularly working on a daily basis to make it all happen. It is becoming big, but i love it, i love to keep myself busy and i will make sure this grows bigger every year, so make sure you come watch and support us this year on the 21st of June 2014:)

How long it takes to organize an event like this?
probably close to 3 months of ACTIVE, daily work… but the entire year of promoting, talking to sponsors and much, much more:)

What differences have you noticed between the first and the last year editions ( riders tricks , participants)
more big names, more media attention, more work, obviously:) haha

As the Organizer of this awesome event can you reveal which was your favorite edition?
Definitely 2013, it was amazing…
Which is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about the last year edition?
i cant even describe the feeling, really…. its pure excitement, really.

last words
MAKE SURE YOU COME SPEND THE DAY WITH US, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT… IM WORKING THE HARDEST TO MAKE THIS THE BEST YEAR SO FAR:) THANKS EVERYONE and HAVE FUN SKATEBOARDING!

Being a team manager : interview with Roman Astleitner – AUSTRIA

logo
How is being a team manager and skateboard company owner? Who better than a company owner can give us some insights on this topic… Here is the interview with Roman Astleitner , the team manager of Muckefuck skateboards & urethane. Enjoy reading this awesome interview

The interview is taken from the online magazine nr.6 , CLICK HERE and read the mag!

Your company was founded in the 2005, nowadays your urethane and skateboards team is very big, a lot of riders skates for you. What do you look for while creating/curating a team?
For the skateboard team the focus was and still is to support the local scene… we just sponsor riders from Austria and Lee Blackwell! I’ve known Lee for a long time and when he was without a board sponsor we decided to put him on the team! The urethane division has an international focus. With our wheels we are able to support riders from all over the globe. In choosing team riders it’s not just how good somebody is on their board. They must be good characters you can go on tour and have a great time with… passion is the second thing – we want guys that are dedicated to skateboarding. We support the underrated – no super stars needed!

How many sponsor-me tapes do you receive a month?
Too many – I mean there are kids that really think they can get sponsored by sending a list with tricks they can do… I watch every single sponsor me video I get and if I see kids took some effort in putting a video together I don’t have any problem supporting them by giving some discount on stuff… I try to help whereever I can.

What do you think are the responsibilities of a team manager?
I mean, I don’t really see myself as a team manger… sure it’s a small part of what I’m doing. My job is to run the whole company. If it comes to our tour I try to bring the team together and organise every need to have a good time! It should be like back in the days – just hitting the road with good friends!

Has it ever happened that someone was injured before the start of a tour? How did you react?
Yeah, it always can happen! Last year Skreech got hurt at a demo we did one day before the official tour started – but he was with us and had a good time… Luckily it was not too bad and he was able to skate a bit in the last days of the tour… injuries belong to skateboarding!

Any projects in the works?
There are always projects – we plan to build a new section for Wörgl’s d.i.y park this summer and there will be a tour again for sure!

Where’s your favourite place to skate?
It’s great to skate at home – there are tons of great parks that were built in the past… the only thing I’m missing in Austria are backyard pools and there definitely should be more vert ramps.

What is your typical day like?
Office work – taking care of productions, sending out stuff, doing all the administrative things that need to be done – spending time with my wife and kids and if the weather is good I skate whenever it’s possible!

Is there anyone on the team you personally like going on tour and working with overall?
All the guys are good to have on tour – it was a pleasure to have Mark Munson as a guest with us in Switzerland last year – he was the one with the most experience on the road!

Do you have a favourite wheel graphic?
That’s a difficult question as we work together with so many amazing designers from all over the world… I really love the new Skreech & J-mag wheel designs, done by Ferdz Valencia from the Philippines and Jacob Ovgren from Sweden. There is a ton of sick artworks from Julien Fincker as well, who is responsible for about 70% of all the wheel designs!

What other skate companies are you a fan of at the moment in terms of their artwork?
Polar has a unique style that I like, Yama, Consolidated, Witchcraft and so on – I’m not a big fan of logo boards that many big brands do these days… skateboards should have rad designs!

Any last words?
Keep skateboarding in hands of skateboarders and never forget to support the underground!

So this is the end, is there anyone you’d like to thank?
I’d like to thank my sponsors for the best support, all my friends, especially Jake! And of course my family for all the support. And you for this interview, thanks.

Yari Copt about Alice in Warriorland (Warrios skateboards) – SWITZERLAND

ALICE IN WARRIORLAND

Here is theinterview with Yari Copt about the Warriors Skateboards half lenght movie “Alice in Warriorland”!

NOTE: the interview is taken from my online magazine nr.5 CLICK HERE and read the magazine

From where the hell was born the idea of the title ALICE IN WARRIORLAND?
We always come out with a theme for the decks serie. This year was the TRIPPY serie. We collaborate with some amazing surreal artists for the graphics. Then we wanted to release a little clip of 5 minutes to support the release of the decks but the team filmed in one month more than half of the video so we ended up with a half lenght video warriors… and when you have a warriors video you get stupid scenes. So the perfect idea to go with the trippy theme was that fucked up psychadelic beautiful story of Alice in Wonderland that changed really fast in Warriorland

Have you ever think about Snow White and the Warriors?
Eheheh not yet. Let’s see next spring what serie of decks we will do and if that can work.

Are You satisfied with this work?
Saying that this was supposed to be a 5 minutes clip yes. But not for a real full lenght no. We are working from now till the end of the year to produce a new video for next spring and that should be better. Counting that no one of our riders is professional but everyone study or work i think we still create good clips in such small periods. So at the end I’m happy if who watch the video is happy and wants to go out and skate.

With what are you most satisfied?
Martino Cattaneo filmed 70% of his video part in 4 weeks. He’s a pleasure to watch him skate and he’s inventive and powerful. All the family is amazing. We just have so much fun. Filming the alice scenes was a blast.. we written the story in the sunday morning and filmed in the afternoon in the park with families walking around… it was ridicolous… ahah

Who are the riders in the movie?
All the warriors family and some army riders (army are all our shop riders), but we miss some skaters cause as said this video was done in 2 month pretty much and some skaters didn’t have the chance to film a lot.

Your favorite part in the movie?
Martino Cattaneo part and I like the part of our new youngest rider Gian Matteuzzi (13 yo) that was a surprise of tricks and style.

There have been some serious injuries during the filming? (hard slams)
Yep. Some fucked up ankles as usual and Livio Gritti broke his knee ligaments on a big rail unfortunately. But is getting back already little by little.

Some of the most funniest facts during filming?
All the alice scenes. So unorganized and so perfect at the end! Every character was so hilarious…

In how much time was filmed and edited?
Some tricks were filmed during the year. But when i said i will release the 5 minutes clip no one was happy about their tricks so we actually filmed 60% of the tricks in 2 month and I edited every night for 3 weeks.

What differences can you see between the first video“Come Out To Skate“ and this?
Come out to skate was more planned as a full lenght, so we took the time to film a lot and prepare everything. They are all classic warriors video, some fun scenes that we enjoy to film togheter and the hardest skate tricks we can do..
Then you need to know that our first warriors video (with the 1st w generation) is Memento Audere Semper (1999)
Then we had Senza tempo 1 and 2 and then came Come out to skate, the first video with the new generation of warriors.

What are your plans for the rest of the year?
The decks are in all the best skateshops right now. We will start to film for next spring video and plan a couple of warriors tours, going to some fun events to meet our friends and take some photos for the mags. I will try to spread warriors to new countries and prepare the new decks and apparel collections for next year. So pratically a little bit of work and a lot of fun.

last words or thanks?
I want to thanks all the Warriors, our photographers Alan Maag and Enea Auberson, the skateshops, the distributions, John Cardiel (Warriors’s God), all the skaters that fight to keep skateboarding pure and unique, all our friends and supporters and everyone who push this damn piece of wood!

interview with Tero Pikkarainen about the Suvilahti DIY – FINLAND

screenshot.19

Here is the interview with Tero Pikkarainen about the Suvilahti DIY Constructing of the Suvilahti DIY skatepark started in spring 2011 when the Finnish Skateboard association rented 900m2 of empty property from city of Helsinki. A group of local skaters got together and started raising money from private sector to build a kind of concrete skatepark that didn’t yet exist in Finland. By the end of 2013 the park have grown massively and a group of these local skaters have started a skatepark design and construction company called Concrete Proof and finished several other concrete skateparks in Finland. Suvilahti DIY will continue growing in spring 2014.

NOTE: The interview is taken from the Skate Agenda online magazine nr.7 CLICK HERE and read the mag !

Since the 1st January 2008 the real estate company “Kiinteistö Oy Kaapelitalo” began developing, renting and maintaining the facilities. The facilities are being renovated for use by artists and other cultural activities. Suvilahti is already home for photography studios, artists… You have skated there before the 2011 who came up with the idea of a skatepark at Suvilahti?
The whole idea was probably brewing in many diffenrent minds simultaneously because other smaller scale DIY in Wamma Park was taken down in 2009 by some city officials. We didn’t have any concrete to skate anywhere in the central Helsinki. Originally, not far away from actual Suvilahti area, two skaters, Mäxy and Jone started building their own DIY spot without permission beside the sea. Some people helped there to build some other obstacles. That got people inspired, and finally Anssi Paukkunen from Finnish Skateboard Association rented the corner from the vacant parking lot in that actual Suvilahti area. And that was the actual beginning of the DIYpark.

How was the place before the skatepark and how it’s now?
It was just a abanadoned parking lot in an old abandoned gas factory area. There was nothing, except shitty asphalt and trash in the bushes.

The place is rented … for how many years will be there without problems? What was there before the skatepark?
Untill 2016 hopefully. The area is under heavy construction, and the park will probably be demolished under the coming years of construction.

This project has brought even tweak to start your own construction company Concrete Proof. Are any new skateparks in progress?
Yes, theres some that we have designed ourselves, and few building projects pending.

The structure that you prefer, which prefers the majority?
The structures I would prefer to build are bowls, quarters and more flowy stuff. But I like to skate everything. Te majority of the parks I used to in Finland are mainly street oriented, so I would like to expand the horizon of Finnish skating by building lots of bowls and gnarly stuff!

When , in the next years , was expand you had already a project in mind or has been built with the flow…
We are always wanting to expand the park, but as we have a company now, we an contribute to the building as much as we would like to. Fortunately, younger crew have started to emerge from the dudes who like to skate there. So, the fire is burning!!

Is this park already a popular destination for the various teams on tour when they are in Finland?
Yes, the Kingpins Drive – tour had the last sessions there, and in the time of the Helsinki Hookup competititon the park is packed. Even Tony Hawk has visited it, while he was driving Gumball 2000 race in Finland in 2013!! That was insane to hear, too bad we didn’t see him skating there!! We saw that only through instagram photos, Bummer!!

..and who impressed you the most? Which is the Best trick ever landed in the park?
Most gnarliest thing I’ve witnessed have to be Julien Benoliel and Fernando Bramsmark busting huge backside ollies and Indy air in the big quarter. On the day to day basis I have to give it to Aapo Olervo who i s always ripping like hell, and of course Eniz always killz it!! But the most stoked I am when I see these tiny kinds wondering to park and starting skating there. They will rip so hard in the future!

Who has helped you and the skaters in this project …some companies?
We have had donations from various companies. Too many to start naming them all. (my memory ain’t what it used to be. One can find them in https://www.facebook.com/SuvilahdenSkeittiparkki)

Any advice for someone who wants to do such a thing?
Just start doing it. It doesn’t come true if you dont start actually doing it. Everything else will follow!!

Which structure is the easier to build , for someone that would like to build a small DIY thing ?
The smaller the the easier, because of the amounts of the concrete needed to be handled. And you can practice while doing it. Ask questions from everybody who knows anything about pouring and troweling. Then get bigger and bigger!! And have fun while doing it, and bring brews!

Contest ,events for the 2014?
Nothing yet planned. I would like to see some Skate Rock type mayhem at the park. Skating, Metal, Beers, Chicks, Burning stuff and all around insanity!!

DYK was formed for skaters and snowboarders, always keeping in mind the comfort of our clothes.

Are you happy with how things are progressing in this adventure?
Yes, we are very happy with how our product is coming out, each day we grow as a brand.

When you’ve gone down this road you made a specific plan that you can follow now or you have had to change your plans a bit?
When you start a project you have to have a clear idea of what you want, but as in life, there are moments when you have to improvise.

Who’s designing the apparel graphics and logos?
The idea of the designs comes from the excitement of past experiences in my life. All that happiness and joy that I have felt was then translated by the designers onto our designs.

With which of your clothing articles you are more proud?
We are proud of all our clothes. All of them are created through the same process, but we are most proud of the fact that we make our own products from start to finish.
